Kyiv to cover burial costs for civilians killed in Russian attacks on the city

Kyiv will cover the costs of burying the people who died in the capital as a result of enemy shelling and destruction caused by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

According to "Komersant Ukrainian", this was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.

It is noted that the relevant decision was made at the plenary session of the Kyiv City Council.

According to Kyiv City Council member Olesia Zubrytska, the initiator of the draft decision, Ukrainian legislation does not currently guarantee free burial of civilians killed in the war, so Kyiv is actually filling this social gap, following the example of other cities and communities that already have such programs.

“We see how the war is claiming the lives of civilians in Kyiv – women, men, and children. These people were not in the military, they just lived, worked, loved their families, went to work, school, and friends. And in an instant, a Russian missile or a drone fragment takes their lives. As a city, we have no right to leave these families alone with the pain and expenses,” she emphasized.

According to Zubrytska, Kyiv assumes a moral and human obligation to give a decent farewell to those who died because of Russian aggression.

“A free burial is our common promise to be there for each other even in the darkest days. Each grave of a civilian victim of the war in Kyiv is a reminder of the price of freedom and that human life is the highest value for us,” she added.

Zubrytska also noted that the burial of civilians killed as a result of Russian attacks on Kyiv will be carried out at the expense of the city budget until the end of martial law.
