Kyivstar has taken the first step towards implementing the innovative Direct to Cell satellite technology (direct satellite communication with a smartphone). Ukraine’s largest electronic communications operator has successfully connected its core network to the Starlink satellite infrastructure. Kyivstar’s SIM card has passed the test for compatibility with the satellite network during a laboratory test, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to the company’s release.

“The integration of Kyivstar SIM card with Starlink satellite network took place on the partner’s side – in a laboratory in the United States. This confirms that the network recognizes Kyivstar subscribers, processes signals correctly and can work synchronously,” the statement said.

The Direct to Cell technology in Ukraine will allow you to keep in touch with a regular smartphone without additional devices. It will not replace the conventional terrestrial network, but will complement Kyivstar’s infrastructure through satellites.

“The service will be available to all Kyivstar subscribers who have phones and SIM cards that support 4G technology. This innovation is an auxiliary one for base stations and will allow subscribers to stay connected in the absence of terrestrial coverage. For example, during a complete blackout or in remote mountainous and rural areas,” the release says.

Kyivstar became the first company in Europe to sign an agreement with Starlink to launch Direct to Cell due to the strategic approach, technological readiness and perseverance of the team.

“We have been following the development of this technology since 2021. In times of war, when communication is critical, the company decided to invest in Direct to Cell,” said Ilya Poltakov, Kyivstar’s Director of New Business Development, “It is a complex process, but in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the National Commission for the State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Postal Services (NCCS), which support us, we have already allocated some spectrum available to the company and are adapting the network for launch.

The next stage, as planned by the company, will be the field testing of Direct to Cell services in selected locations in Ukraine, which Kyivstar intends to start in the summer of 2025.

As reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"reported, 340 thousand Ukrainians changed their mobile operator last year.
