China has completely stopped importing electricity from Russia

Since January 1, 2026, China has completely stopped importing electricity from Russia and is not even purchasing the minimum amount stipulated in the contract.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Russian propaganda media.
According to media sources, the refusal to supply was the result of high export prices, which exceeded domestic prices in China for the first time in January 2026. This made further purchases unprofitable for Beijing.
Inter RAO (an export-import operator) exported surplus electricity from the Far East to China.
The electricity supply contract was signed with the Chinese State Grid Corporation in 2012. It is valid until 2037.
It was expected that over the entire period, about 100 billion kWh, or about 4 billion kWh per year, would be supplied to China. The formula for the price of electricity established by the contract is unknown.
Sources say that electricity exports to China are unlikely to resume in 2026. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Energy assumes that exports will resume if a new request is received from China.
