onJune 26, 2025, the Kyiv Modern Ballet Academic Theater will present the premiere of the ballet in two acts “On the Beautiful Blue Danube ” choreographed by Radu Poklitaru at the Zhovtnevyi Palace.
The premiere of the ballet “On the Beautiful Blue Danube ” is being implemented as part of the large-scale art project “20 Seasons of Sustainability and Innovation: Premiere Events of the Kyiv Modern Ballet”, which is supported by the Kyiv city budget under the program of providing financial assistance on a repayable, free-of-charge basis. The project was initiated on the occasion of the theater’s twentieth anniversary as one of the key tools for visualizing its repertoire policy based on a combination of interpretive depth, aesthetic innovation, and strategic renewal of Ukrainian stage culture.
The production offers a modern choreographic interpretation of Johann Strauss’s music, in which theatrical lightness, stylized ballroom world and motifs of social masquerade are comprehended in the language of plastic drama. Radu Poklitaru, the choreographer and author of the libretto , forms a new artistic fabric of the performance, in which the ballet functions as a full-fledged stage narrative that combines the wit of vaudeville, the energy of modern dance and a deep emotional structure. The production is an example of the high integration of the musical heritage of the 19th century into the current context of the new Ukrainian stage.

In order not to get lost among the many ballets with my own “Beautiful Blue Danube,” I created a completely new concept and libretto for the performance. Vaudeville, comedy of positions, adultery, frivolous treachery of flirting and cross-dressing, multiplied by the aesthetics of modern dance – these are the ingredients of the theatrical delicacy that we, together with the artists of the Kyiv Modern Ballet Theater, have prepared for our audience. Please tune in as seriously as possible to the most frivolous tone – and enjoy the theatrical appetite, “ notes Radu Poklitaru.

The visual part of the performance combines digital scenography and multifaceted costumes. The costumes are designed by Dmytro Kuryata, who creates stage images that not only stylize the Vienna era, but also reflect the internal motives of the characters.

This is not a historical costume – it is a plastic metaphor. Every silhouette, texture and color is about what the characters hide behind their outward lightness, “ comments Dmitry Kuryata.
Digital video scenography is designed by the artist Olga Nikitina. Her video projections act as a visual score that complements the music and plastic.
“My goal is to create a visual background that breathes in unison with Strauss’s music and the artists’ plasticity. The space here does not capture reality – it multiplies it, reflects it, transforms it, “ explains Nikitina.

The ballet “On the Beautiful Blue Danube” opens a series of events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Kyiv Modern Ballet Theater, which has gained a reputation for two decades as an institution that shapes a new quality of Ukrainian stage culture – deep, technically advanced and internationally relevant.
