Mykhailo Poplavskyi, the long-time head of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, has lost his position.
This was reported to RBC-Ukraine by sources in the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Why Poplavsky lost his position as rector
According to informed sources in the Ministry of Education and Science, Mykhailo Poplavskyi is no longer the rector of KNUCA.
The reason is that his contract has expired.
It is also worth noting that the “singing rector” has already been the head of the educational institution twice. So now his place will be taken by someone else.
Why rectors in Ukraine can lose their positions
Earlier, Deputy Minister of Education Mykola Trofimenko said in an interview with the media that the consolidation of higher education institutions is continuing in Ukraine.
At the same time, according to him, a number of rectors may lose their positions.
The representative of the Ministry of Education and Science explained that the Ukrainian law “On Higher Education” provides for the possibility of a rector holding office only twice in a row.
“We do not support the tricks that were used during fake reorganizations before 2023. When new universities are formed, it cannot be done so that a particular person can take this position again,” the deputy minister stressed.
How many rectors may lose their positions
“We expect changes to take place at universities. Especially since a large number of rectors are coming to the end of their second term,” Trofimenko said.
When asked how many rectors will lose their positions, he replied: “About 50 rectors, I think, somewhere around that number.”
At the same time, the official noted that “this will happen gradually, and elections will be held in pools.”
“We saw elections at the Frank National University in Lviv and at the Lviv Polytechnic. It was an absolutely wonderful, democratic, conscious procedure. And it was a celebration of democracy in the mature, effective collective of both universities: 8-9 candidates, debates, strategies, visions, a second round,” recalled the deputy head of the Ministry of Education and Science.
This, in his words, is “beautiful and right.”
“And it shows what we are striving for across the country. We don’t have bad or good universities. They are all unique. And it depends on the teams how they can compete and attract resources,” Trofimenko concluded.
