Summer camps for children in time of war: where to work

Summer is a time of relaxation, fun and new experiences for children. Camps are one of the most popular options for active summer holidays. They offer not only interesting entertainment programmes, but also the opportunity for children to develop, communicate with their peers and spend time outdoors.

Chernivtsi region

Camps for schoolchildren will start operating in the region on 3 June, Volyn region

In the summer of 2024, summer camps for children will start operating in Lutsk for the first time, as they stopped accepting children in 2020 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic. They will operate from 3 to 16 June. Only privileged categories of the population will be able to go on holiday. These are:

  • children of fallen soldiers;
  • orphans;
  • children from low-income families.

And if parents whose child is a member of these categories do not want to send him or her to a summer school camp, then non-privileged students can take this place.

We still want our children to improve their health as much as possible. Parents may not want to send their child to a school camp. In this case, we will be able to enrol a child from a non-privileged category,” explained Vitaliy Bondar, head of the Lutsk City Council’s education department.

“Children will also be able to attend summer schools organised by the Minor Academy of Sciences. Such

  • school of Journalism;
  • school of Business and Leadership;
  • STEM Academy;
  • mathematics school;
  • school of geography;
  • school of Robotics;
  • school of Chemistry;
  • IT intensive;
  • school of Materials Science;
  • school of Psychology;
  • school of History;
  • law School.
  • They will accept children from 4 to 15 June. Parents will need to fill out a Google form and pay a charitable contribution of UAH 200.

    Rivne region

    Summer camps will start accepting children on 3 June at 31 educational institutions in Rivne. The regional centre will also host a city summer camp run by the Art Maestro art school-studio. It will accept students aged 7 to 14 from 24 June to 9 August.

    Poltava region

    Summer camps for children in the Poltava region will not work this year. The reason is the lack of bomb shelters, according to the Poltava Regional Military Administration. However, local communities can open camps at their discretion, provided that the school has a shelter equipped to meet all requirements.

    Odesa region

    In Odesa region, 211 school camps will be opened, according to the Main Department of the State Consumer Service in Odesa region. The main condition for the opening is the availability of shelters in educational institutions, as well as the organisation of meals for students in compliance with all sanitary requirements.

    Vinnytsia region

    In the Vinnytsia region, 31 school camps will operate from 4 to 21 June. The first priority will be given to children from privileged categories.

    Dnipro region

    In Dnipro, summer camps will start on 3 June.

    We plan to organise holidays for 5,780 children. The camps will be open from 3 June for 15 working days with a 6-hour daily opening and catering. That is, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. These camps are free of charge and are designed for children aged 6 and 11,” said Inna Vasylieva, head of the social protection sector of the life safety division of the education department of the humanitarian policy department of the Dnipro City Council.

    Chernihiv region

    Camps based on public schools will operate from 3 to 21 June, according to the Chernihiv City Council. Children in need of special social attention and support will be provided with free meals.

    Ivano-Frankivsk region

    In the region, most summer camps will operate at out-of-school educational institutions. They will open their doors to holidaymakers in early June and will be rehabilitating schoolchildren until mid-August.

    “All of our out-of-school institutions will have summer schools. From our experience, more than 10,000 children participate in summer schools. There are several areas to choose from: sports sections, art, ecology,” said Ruslan Martsinkiv, Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk.

    The region will also have a summer camp called Limnytsia, which will host not only children of fallen soldiers but also holidaymakers from other social categories. In the village of Vistova (Kalush district), children will have a 14-day camp.

    In total, 60 camps for pupils will operate in Ivano-Frankivsk. In addition, children will be able to relax in the Artek-Bukovel camp.

    Zhytomyr region

    In the summer, there will be organised leisure camps, interactive, outdoor forms of recreation for children in neighbourhoods at the place of residence, the Zhytomyr Regional Council
