Maguchikh nominated for World Athlete of the Year: how to vote

Ukrainian Olympic champion Yaroslava Maguchikh will compete for the title of the world’s best athlete in 2024 according to World Athletics. Anyone can vote on social media. This is stated on the organisation’s website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
In 2024, the system for selecting award winners has changed. Like last year, there will be three separate awards for men and three for women, which will recognise the athletes of the year in athletics and non-stadium competitions. The best athletes of the year among men and women will also be awarded.
The awards will be presented to men and women in three categories: technical events, running events and non-stadium events.
Maguchikh is in the running category.
This is Maguchikh’s third nomination for the International Federation of Athletics award. In 2022 and 2023, she was also shortlisted, but did not receive the award.
Yaroslava Maguchikh’s rivals for the title of the world’s best athlete will be:
- Valarie Allman (USA) – Olympic discus champion;
- Tara Davis-Woodhall (USA) – Olympic and world champion in the indoor long jump;
- Nina Kennedy (Australia) – Olympic champion and Diamond League winner in the pole vault;
- Nafissatou Thiam (Belgium) – Olympic heptathlon champion.
How the voting will take place
A panel of international experts has compiled a long list of nominees for each of the three main categories of the award. A vote will be held to determine the two finalists in each category.
The World Athletic Council’s votes will count for 50% of the result, while World Athletics Family’s votes and social media votes will count for 25% of the result.
The World Athletic Council’s and World Athletics Family’s votes will be cast via email, while social voting will be open on Facebook, Instagram and X.
a “Like” on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on X will count as one vote.
