MEP Marie Le Pen has called the US decision to suspend aid to Ukraine “cruel”. The politician made this statement during a conversation with journalists of the Le Figaro newspaper, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“I think the cruelty of this decision is reprehensible. It is very cruel to the Ukrainian soldiers who are participating in the patriotic defense of their country,” Le Pen said.
However, she added that no one can force the United States to continue its support if the country no longer wishes to do so.
“However, it is very questionable not to give Ukraine a reasonable amount of time to recover,” the French politician summarized.
It should be noted that earlier, Marie Le Pen refrained from commenting after the meeting between the Ukrainian and American leaders in the Oval Office.
The United States suspends military aid to Ukraine: what is known
on March 3, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of all US military assistance to Ukraine. This decision was the result of a controversial meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, during which disagreements over the peace process with Russia escalated.
The United States has provided significant support to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022, providing more than $180 billion in aid, including advanced military equipment such as missiles and air defense systems. The suspension covers critical military support, including Patriot air defense systems, which are essential to Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
Ukrainian government officials, including Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, have expressed confidence in maintaining their defense posture despite the suspension. However, they recognize the potential challenges ahead and call for continued international support.
Meanwhile, European leaders have reacted with concern, emphasizing the need to strengthen their own defense capabilities in light of the US decision. The European Commission has announced plans to strengthen its defense industry, potentially mobilizing 800 billion euros to support Ukraine and strengthen European security.
In turn, Russia may see the suspension as an opportunity to force Ukraine into peace talks on favorable terms. This development could change the dynamics of the ongoing conflict, depending on Ukraine’s resilience and the support it receives from other allies.
US President Donald Trump’s decision has been criticized both domestically and internationally. Critics argue that cutting off aid undermines Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression and could embolden its adversaries. They compare it to historical acts of appeasement, warning against the potential dangers of such a move.
Currently, military and political experts say that the suspension of American military aid brings uncertainty to Ukraine’s defense capabilities and stability in the region as a whole. Although European allies are trying to fill the gap, the lack of support from the United States poses significant challenges.
