“A waste of time”. Macron fails to convince Trump to give Ukraine security guarantees, EU worried – Politico

During his visit to the White House on February 24, French President Emmanuel Macron failed to receive specific assurances from US leader Donald Trump regarding US security guarantees for Ukraine, the EU is concerned.
Politico writes about this with reference to officials and diplomats of the European Union, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
On Wednesday, February 26, during an emergency video conference, Macron informed EU leaders about the results of his visit to Washington.
According to the EU diplomat, whose name is not disclosed, the French president said that Trump did not make any clear promises regarding the security mechanism.
“So, indeed, the strategic ambiguity on this issue remains,” Politico quoted its source as saying.
The publication reminds that despite the fact that the United States and Russia are negotiating to end the war without the participation of Europe and Kyiv, European capitals, including Paris and London, are trying to organize a peacekeeping mission for Ukraine in case an agreement is reached.
However, Trump has not yet given a clear answer to the question of guarantees that the United States can provide, despite the resource agreement that may be signed in the near future.
Despite the fact that the Trump administration has made it clear that US troops will not be involved, Europeans do not lose hope that America will be able to offer other support. For example, air defense, military logistics, and intelligence.
“It was a waste of time,” a senior EU official said of Macron’s visit to the White House.
Some level of U.S. involvement in any European military deployment in Ukraine is crucial, Politico notes.
European leaders, embarrassed by the uncertainty of US actions in Ukraine, are trying to develop a common position. On Sunday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will also visit the White House, is to meet with EU leaders in London. At this meeting, they will discuss joint plans in the field of defense and security.
Then, on March 6, the European Council will meet.
The possibility of appointing a special EU representative to participate in any peace talks on behalf of the bloc is also being discussed.
For his part, Trump still has not shown interest in European participation in the negotiations he is conducting with Russia, Politico stated.
To recap, US President Donald Trump said that Washington was not going to provide Ukraine with “too many” security guarantees.
