Mass starvation in Gaza: over 100 people, 80 children die

At least 101 Palestinians, including 80 children, have died of starvation in Gaza since the start of the war, according to Palestinian officials. Most of the deaths have been recorded over the past few weeks, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Reuters.

In the last 24 hours alone, 15 people died of malnutrition, including a six-week-old baby, Yousef al-Safadi, and 13-year-old Abdulhamid al-Galban.

Doctors report that the wave of famine that has been hovering over the enclave for months has now begun to take its toll in the form of deaths. About 600,000 people are suffering from malnutrition, including at least 60,000 pregnant women.

Adham al-Safadi, the uncle of the deceased baby, said that the family was unable to find infant formula to feed the child.

“You can’t find milk, and if you do, it costs $100 a can,” he said,

– he said.

Baby food is sorely lacking, according to reports from humanitarian organizations, doctors and residents.

800 executed

Civilians in Gaza are dying not only from starvation, but also from executions by Israeli forces. More than 800 people have been killed in recent weeks while trying to get food, according to Palestinian officials, mostly as a result of mass shootings by Israeli soldiers near Gaza Humanitarian Fund distribution centers. When chaos breaks out in a crowd of people struggling to access food, Israeli soldiers often simply shoot into it to bring order.

Food supplies in Gaza have been depleted since Israel cut off all supplies to the territory in March and then reopened them in May with new restrictive measures that Israel says are necessary to prevent aid from being diverted to militants.

Israel, which controls all supplies to Gaza, denies responsibility for the food shortage. The Israeli military said it was

“consider the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza as a matter of utmost importance”

and are working to facilitate its entry in coordination with the international community.

Israeli military statistics show that an average of 146 aid trucks per day entered Gaza during the war. The United States has stated that a minimum of 600 trucks per day is needed to supply the population of Gaza.

The world’s response

More than 100 humanitarian and human rights organizations, including Mercy Corps, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Refugees International, called on governments to take action to end the famine in Gaza, demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the lifting of all restrictions on the flow of humanitarian aid.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the situation for the 2.3 million residents of the Palestinian enclave a “horrific show.”
