Large-scale power outages: Ukrzaliznytsia switched trains to backup thermal traction
8 January 00:52
Due to large-scale emergency power outages in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukrzaliznytsia switched all trains in these regions to backup thermal traction. The company announced this on the evening of January 7 on its Telegram channel, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The company emphasized that the decision was made quickly in order to maintain the stability of passenger and regional train traffic in difficult conditions.
What is known about train traffic
Ukrzaliznytsia noted that signaling and communication systems are operating on backup power, and railway stations are being supplied with electricity by generators. Hot drinks, gadget charging, and stable communication via Starlink are traditionally available at stations.
The company emphasized that departure delays have been minimized and a number of trains are already running on backup diesel locomotives.
Which trains have been switched to diesel traction
The following trains are currently running on backup diesel traction:
- No. 734 Kyiv — Dnipro;
- No. 37 Zaporizhzhia — Kyiv;
- No. 119 Dnipro — Kholm;
- No. 79 Dnipro — Lviv.
In addition, it is reported that Dnipro City Express trains will also be powered by thermal traction.
Reason for the changes
Ukrzaliznytsia reminded that emergency power cuts were introduced in the Dnipropetrovsk region and a number of other cities in Ukraine after the enemy attack . This was the reason for the switch to backup traction schemes.
The company assures that it will continue to monitor the situation in the power system and, if necessary, will promptly adjust the operation of rail transport to ensure the safety and continuity of transportation.
