The future of hydrogen energy: TotalEnergies and Air Liquide launch powerful electrolyzers in Europe

18 February 15:57

on February 18, 2025, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide announced a joint investment of more than €1 billion to implement two major green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of Air Liquide.

The electrolysis projects will reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies refineries by 450 thousand metric tons per year and contribute to the achievement of European renewable energy targets in transport.

ELYgator project: 200 MW electrolyzer in Rotterdam

The first project, known as ELYgator, involves the construction and operation of a 200 MW electrolyzer in the Maasvlakte district of Rotterdam. This electrolyzer is expected to produce up to 23,000 tons of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen annually, starting in late 2027. The project will utilize renewable electricity from offshore wind farms, including TotalEnergies’ stake in the OranjeWind wind farm, as well as a power purchase agreement with Vattenfall from the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm. The project has already received support from the EU Innovation Fund and the Dutch IPCEI program.

Joint venture for a 250 MW electrolyzer in the province of Zealand

The second project involves a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide on a 50/50 basis to develop a 250 MW electrolyzer in the province of Zeeland (Netherlands). The electrolyzer, scheduled to be commissioned in 2029, will produce up to 30 thousand tons of green hydrogen annually. The project will also utilize renewable electricity from the OranjeWind wind farm and aims to reduce CO₂ emissions at the TotalEnergies site in Zealand by up to 300 thousand tons per year.

Together, these projects will reduce CO₂ emissions at TotalEnergies’ facilities in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons per year. The green hydrogen produced will be used to decarbonize processes at the refineries in Antwerp and Zealand, replacing conventional hydrogen from fossil fuels. This is in line with TotalEnergies’ strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of its European refineries by 2030.

Additional agreement for the Antwerp platform

As part of the ELYgator project, TotalEnergies has entered into an agreement with Air Liquide to use 130 MW of electrolyzer capacity to produce 15 thousand tons of green hydrogen annually for its Antwerp platform. Under this agreement, TotalEnergies will supply renewable electricity generated by the OranjeWind wind farm, and Air Liquide will convert it into green hydrogen. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and will reduce CO₂ emissions at the Antwerp facility by up to 150 thousand tons per year.

Air Liquide is one of the world’s largest companies specializing in the production, storage and supply of industrial gases, as well as the development of technologies for energy, medicine and industry. The company is headquartered in Paris.

TotalEnergies is a French multinational energy company engaged in oil and gas production and refining, as well as actively developing renewable energy projects. It is one of the largest energy corporations in the world, represented in more than 130 countries, and invests in solar, wind, and hydrogen energy to reduce carbon emissions.
