Christmas Eve menu: how much does it cost to prepare 12 dishes this year

This year, twelve traditional Christmas dinner dishes will cost about UAH 1,365, which is 41% more than last year’s UAH 970. These data were published by the Institute of Agrarian Economics based on average prices of Ukrainian supermarkets as of December, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Scientists have calculated the cost of a traditional Christmas table, which consists of 12 dishes: kutia, uzvar, fried fish, borscht, dumplings with three fillings, stewed cabbage, fried potatoes, vinaigrette salad, as well as vegetables and pickles.
Cooking wheat kutia (950 g of traditional recipe products) will cost UAH 175.05 and will be the second most expensive dish on the holiday table.
The most expensive ingredients of this year’s dish are: poppy seeds – UAH 68.5 per 200 g, as well as walnuts – UAH 44.89 and raisins – UAH 21.73 per 100 g, respectively. The main ingredient of kutia, durum wheat groats, will cost UAH 21.30 per 400 g, and honey will cost another UAH 16.90 per 100 g.
Acompote of dried apples, pears and prunes will cost 105.36 UAH (600 g per 2 liters of water).
This year, the most expensive dish on the table will be fried fish, the price of which will be 306.97 UAH (for 2 kg of live carp – 301 UAH, and for 200 g of flour – 5.97 UAH).
Thecost of lean borscht with beans will be the third most expensive for Christmas dinner. For 2.535 kg of food (for 2 liters of water), you will have to pay 131.94 UAH. The most expensive ingredient will be dry white beans (300 g) – UAH 43.53.
Ukrainians will pay 67.75 UAH for avinaigrette salad (1.73 kg of food), and the most expensive will be barrel pickles – 21.40 UAH per 200 g.
For dumplings with potatoes (1.51 kg of products), you will have to pay 50.06 UAH, with cabbage (1.481 kg of products) – 52.50 UAH, and with cherries – 69.74 UAH (for 810 g of products).
The researchers calculated the cost of dishes for a holiday dinner at the average prices of Ukrainian supermarkets as of early December.
Given the growing dynamics of food prices, the cost of the Christmas table in 2024 will be UAH 1,365. This will be 41% higher than last year’s figure of UAH 970.
