Subway, minibus, tram: where in Ukraine is public transportation the cheapest?

In Kharkiv, travel on the metro, trolleybuses, trams, and some buses has been free for nearly four years. At the same time, the fare for minibuses is one of the highest among other regional centers. The cheapest way to travel by minibus is in Kherson. As for trams and trolleybuses, residents of Lviv and visitors to the city pay the most per trip.

Which cities have the most expensive minibuses and subways

As of March 2026, the most expensive minibus fares are in Kharkiv—25–30 UAH. At the same time, public transit (subway, trams, trolleybuses, and some buses) has been free in Kharkiv since May 2022. It is worth noting that the Kharkiv region currently hosts the largest number of internally displaced persons.

In Kyiv, a minibus ride costs an average of 20 UAH. The metro in the capital costs 8 UAH. The most expensive metro fare is in Dnipro—10 UAH.

Minibus fares are also among the highest in Lviv—17–25 UAH, Ivano-Frankivsk—18–20 UAH, Uzhhorod—18–23 UAH, Dnipro—20 UAH, Zaporizhzhia—17–18 UAH, and Cherkasy—16–20 UAH. In comparison, average minibus fares are 18 UAH in Rivne and Lutsk, 15–18 UAH in Vinnytsia, 17 UAH in Chernihiv, 12–15 UAH in Poltava and Ternopil, 10–15 UAH in Kropyvnytskyi, in Chernivtsi – 17 UAH, in Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, and Sumy – 15 UAH. In Mykolaiv, minibuses cost 15–20 UAH.

The cheapest minibus ride is in Kherson – 8 UAH.

Fare for trams and trolleybuses in Ukrainian cities

The most expensive trams and trolleybuses are in Lviv – 17–25 UAH. Next are Ivano-Frankivsk (15–20 UAH), Zaporizhzhia and Odesa – 15 UAH, Ternopil (12–15 UAH), Rivne (12–14 UAH), and Zhytomyr (12–14 UAH). In Chernivtsi, Chernihiv, and Cherkasy, trams and trolleybuses cost an average of 13 UAH. This mode of public transport is cheapest in Vinnytsia—12 UAH, Dnipro—10 UAH, Poltava—8.5–10 UAH, Khmelnytskyi—9 UAH, Kropyvnytskyi—8 UAH, Mykolaiv—8 UAH, Sumy—8 UAH, and Kherson—6 UAH. There are no trams or trolleybuses in Uzhhorod.
