The Ministry of Justice showed the consequences of the Russian attack on the penal colony in Zaporizhzhia: photos, video

In the evening of July 28, 2025, Russian troops conducted an air strike on the Bilenkivska correctional colony in Zaporizhzhia region. The attack took place at approximately 23:28, when four guided aerial bombs were dropped on the territory of the colony. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.
As a result of a direct hit, the dining room was completely destroyed, and the administrative headquarters and quarantine area suffered significant damage. The explosions killed 17 convicts and injured 42 others, some of whom were hospitalized in serious condition in the hospitals of the Ministry of Health.

About 40 other people received injuries of varying severity. One employee of the institution sustained shrapnel wounds to the face, his condition is assessed as light.
About 50 security officers of the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine were involved in restoring control and security on the territory of the colony. All the victims were provided with first aid, the wounded are under observation in the medical unit, the duty unit and other departments of the institution. It is important that the perimeter of the colony was not damaged – there is no threat of escape.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized:
“This strike once again demonstrates a gross violation of international humanitarian law by the Russian armed forces. The shelling of civilian infrastructure, including penitentiary institutions, is regarded as a war crime.”

Currently, the aftermath of the attack is being eliminated, the identities of the dead and wounded are being clarified, and the facts of the destruction are being recorded to transfer data to international authorities.
