The Ministry of Education will ask schoolchildren what a school should be like
20 February 09:42
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is launching an all-Ukrainian survey of students in grades 5-11 to find out the real educational needs of schoolchildren to create a high-quality and practical education system. This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the Ministry of Education, such a survey is an opportunity for students to speak honestly about their needs and opinions in order to influence the future of Ukrainian education. Students can join the survey on the U-Report platform.
What exactly will the students’ opinions help us do?
The survey is being conducted to implement the comprehensive policy “Education for Life”. This initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice, the school curriculum and the real needs of students. The opinion of students will be useful for developing new approaches to the organization of the educational process, in particular regarding
– content of the curriculum;
– selection of textbook formats and teaching materials;
– arrangement of learning spaces (laboratories, workshops, art studios).
The Ministry of Education will use the results of the survey for further educational changes.
What does the “Education for Life” initiative envisage?
“Education for Life” is a policy of systematic renewal of educational content, which is a continuation and strengthening of the New Ukrainian School reform.
“School education should prepare students for real life. This is the main goal, and the goal of educational policy is to create a system where every student not only acquires knowledge but also develops practical skills, learns to think critically and work in a team. At the same time, we strive to facilitate the work of teachers by providing them with clear tools and methods to achieve educational goals,” said Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi.
Implementation of the policy involves a comprehensive approach through the development of concepts for all educational sectors.
The educational sector unites related subjects and courses. For example, the natural science education field includes physics, chemistry, biology, partially geography, ecology, and astronomy as separate subjects or integrated natural science courses. The concepts of each field will become roadmaps for change. They will define not only the content and methods of teaching, but also the interconnections between subjects and courses within the field. They will define what competencies each field forms, how to evaluate students’ progress, and what a modern educational space should look like.
As early as February 22, 2025, the Ministry of Education will start an open dialogue on how to update the teaching of subjects and courses. During professional meetings, educators will work on creating new concepts for each educational area.
The first drafts of the concepts will be published in the spring of 2025 for public discussion. Once approved by the order, starting in September 2025, individual schools will pilot content updates in three areas: art, technology, and natural sciences for grades 5.
