Target or missile: how MiG-21s can become a nightmare for the Russian military

6 December 2024 09:47

Decommissioned Soviet MiG-21 aircraft may find new life in the war against Russia. The idea of turning old fighters into remote-controlled targets or even ersatz cruise missiles is of great interest, but requires a careful analysis of the advantages and disadvantages. This was written by the Defence Express, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Recently it became known that Croatia plans to write off its MiG-21s and switch to modern French Rafale fighters. This means that some of these aircraft may become available to other countries, including Ukraine, which is in dire need of new means of warfare.

Back in Soviet times, a technology was developed to turn MiG-21s into remotely controlled targets called M21m. To do this, all unnecessary equipment was dismantled from the aircraft, including radar stations, which reduced its weight by 1 ton. Instead, remote control systems were installed, allowing the aircraft to fly without a pilot.

MiG-21 as a striking tool

The basic characteristics of the MiG-21 make it potentially effective for strike missions:

  • Speed: up to 2230 km/h at altitude.
  • Maximum range: up to 1470 km with additional fuel tanks.
  • Payload: up to 1300 kg.

If this aircraft is used as a modified Tu-141 Strizh, it could become a strike aircraft for attacks on enemy territory. The aircraft, lightened after conversion, could serve as an ersatz cruise missile capable of striking Russian military targets.

“Arrivals” of MiG-21s in the form of cruise missiles could have a powerful psychological effect on the Russian army.

Challenges and nuances

However, the idea has a number of challenges:

  1. Access to aircraft: It is not yet known whether Ukraine will be able to obtain decommissioned MiG-21s from Croatia or Romania, which retired these aircraft in 2023.
  2. Resources for modification: The conversion of MiG-21s into strike aircraft requires significant financial and technical resources.
  3. Accuracy: The question remains about the effectiveness of targeting and accuracy of such a “missile”.

Experts emphasize that the idea of converting the MiG-21 into a weapon has potential, but requires a balanced approach. It is important to assess the costs and risks before implementing this initiative.

The MiG-21, once considered one of the most powerful machines of its time, may take on a new role – to become a symbol of Ukraine’s innovative approach to warfare.
