Carrot prices are falling: prices on the Ukrainian market have dropped by 72% over the past year
19 March 21:56
Ukraine saw another drop in carrot prices this week. Due to increased supply from local farms and aggressive clearance sales, farmers are forced to lower prices to maintain sales.
This was reported by the analytical project EastFruit, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
What’s happening in the market
According to EastFruit, the supply of carrots from local farms has increased significantly this week.
Farmers are bringing their produce to market more actively, which has led to:
- a decline in consumer demand;
- a slowdown in sales;
- a further drop in prices.
With supply exceeding demand, sellers are forced to lower prices to move their products more quickly.
How much do carrots cost
As of midweek, carrots from local farms are selling for:
- 5–11 UAH per kilogram
- approximately $0.11–0.25 per kilogram
This is:
- 12% cheaper than a week earlier;
- on average 72% cheaper than in mid-March of last year.
Why prices are falling
Market participants cite several reasons for the price drop:
Warmer weather and clearance sales
With the change in weather, many farms began actively selling products that had remained in storage.
Surplus of produce on the market
The simultaneous entry of a large number of suppliers has created a surplus.
A large proportion of substandard produce
There are many lower-quality root vegetables on the market, which is also putting downward pressure on prices, even for high-quality carrots.
What will happen to prices next
Market analysts warn that prices may continue to fall if the situation does not change in the near future.
Producers may continue to lower prices in order to:
- maintain sales momentum;
- sell off remaining stock more quickly.
The overall situation in the vegetable market
Similar trends are observed in other segments of the fruit and vegetable market.
In particular, EastFruit analysts previously reported that wholesale prices for table beets in Ukraine fell by approximately 15% due to a seasonal increase in supply.
