Fraudsters attack online banking: how to recognize fraud and not lose money
28 August 15:50
Internet banking users are again in the crosshairs of fraudsters. Swindlers have come up with a new scheme to gain access to citizens’ bank accounts and steal their funds. How the fraudulent scheme works, told the Cyber Police, and gave advice on how not to get hooked by the swindlers.
Here is an example of a fraudulent scheme:
- Fraudsters call under the guise of bank employees and inform you that the old mobile application no longer works. They “convincingly” ask to install the new app.
- After the call, they send a link to the supposedly official app via messengers or a chatbot. In reality, this is a phishing site that allows scammers to gain access to the user’s personal data.
- The scammers then ask to provide a code from a text message or call from the bank’s real security service. This code is enough to enter the user’s personal account and steal money.

How to protect yourself from fraud
Do not trust unfamiliar calls. If you receive a call allegedly from the bank – stop the conversation and call back to the official number specified on the payment card yourself.
Use only verified sources. Download the bank’s app only through Google Play or App Store. Check:
- Developer name – it should match the official name of the bank.
- Link on the bank’s website – choose the app through the bank’s official website or app.
- Number of downloads, rating, reviews – official apps usually have high ratings and tens of thousands of downloads.
Do not hand over sms codes! Real bank employees never ask for one-time confirmation codes.
