Kharkiv-based modernist poet Oleksiy Bezpaltsev was killed in the fighting for Ukraine. The death of the Ukrainian defender was reported on the Facebook page of the cultural and human rights organization PEN Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Modernist poet Oleksiy Bezpaltsev died at the front at the age of 34. He was reportedly killed while performing a combat mission in the Kharkiv region. Prior to that, he had been holding the line in Pokrovske for a year,” the report says.
During his life, Oleksiy managed to publish two collections of short stories and participated in numerous literary slams.
“He was cheerful and energetic. He always loved movies, music, poetry, thrash, drinking and cycling. He was and will be the best. The best president of Kharkiv, the King of Kharkiv thrash and underground is Oleksiy “Hat” Bezpaltsev,” one of Bezpaltsev’s friends was quoted in PEN Ukraine.
“Among Kharkiv’s creative “youngsters,” among all these poets with strong voices, pathos, and student (often teenage) texts, there are sometimes real talents, some of whom go far beyond the average literary evening. Bezpaltsev claims to be a kind of cool writer whose works raise serious, even eternal problems,” journalist and writer Arseniy Troyan wrote about the writer.
“What I liked him for was his constant search, experiments on himself, his eccentricity and unconditional talent… The last time I saw him was a year ago in Kyiv at the performance of Zhadan and the Dogs, and he, as always, calm and with his trademark smile, said that he was in the army,” Ukrainian actor and comedian Oleksandr Serdyuk wrote about the writer on social media.
