A large-scale project is being implemented on the island of Khortytsia to build a special shelter with radiation protection. The new shelter will become a safe haven for more than 100,000 museum exhibits and will also be able to protect people in case of a threat. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration Ivan Fedorov on Telegram.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has already approved the procedure for implementing this important project on the territory of the national reserve.

“The modern shelter with radiation protection to be built on the territory of the reserve will serve as a storage facility for more than 100,000 museum exhibits. In the event of a military threat, it will reliably protect the employees and visitors of the reserve,” noted Fedorov.

The new shelter on Khortytsia is designed to accommodate up to 200 people at a time, ensuring the safety of visitors and employees of the reserve in case of a threat.

Dual purpose of the new facility

The new building will have two functions:

  • In peacetime, it will serve as a modern storage facility for more than 100,000 museum exhibits.
  • In the event of a threat, it will serve as a reliable radiation shelter for visitors and employees of the reserve.

Acting Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Tetiana Berezhna emphasized:

“In times of war, the protection of cultural heritage is one of the state’s priorities. Therefore, we are creating conditions in which culture can live in the face of the greatest challenges. Khortytsia deserves modern solutions that combine culture, security and sustainable development.”

Currently, there are no bomb shelters on the territory of the reserve, so the new facility will be the first and strategically important for the preservation of Ukraine’s historical and cultural heritage.
