Researchers from Japan’s Yamagata University have discovered 248 new geoglyphs on the famous Nazca Plateau in Peru, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This was reported by NHK with reference to a statement by the scientists, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The new images were discovered during field research that lasted from 2023 to 2024. Scientists actively used artificial intelligence to identify them.

The geoglyphs include an image of a priest holding a severed human head, as well as images of corn and a fox. The researchers also confirmed several locations where geoglyphs with the same theme are concentrated.

The scientists suggest that these images could be a means of conveying the beliefs, values, and memories of the people of the time. They call the new geoglyphs “important keys” to understanding the culture and worldview of the ancient peoples who created these drawings more than a thousand years ago.

The photos of the newly discovered geoglyphs will be presented at the World Expo 2025 in the Peru pavilion in Osaka.

Earlier, the same group of Japanese researchers had already reported the discovery of 168 new geoglyphs on the Nazca plateau.
