New solar flares detected: will there be magnetic storms?

19 February 15:33

Astronomers have recorded new solar flares, which could affect the Earth’s magnetosphere. On Thursday, February 19, the geomagnetic field is expected to be agitated, but no strong magnetic storms are forecast yet. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Meteoprog.

What flares occurred on the Sun

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), solar activity has remained relatively low over the past 24 hours. Scientists have recorded:

  • two class B flares;
  • two C1-class flares.

Experts explain that flares of these classes usually do not have a serious impact on Earth and do not cause powerful magnetic storms.

At the same time, 24 sunspots have been recorded on the Sun, indicating continued activity.

Will there be a magnetic storm on February 19?

According to astro-forecasters, on February 19, the Earth’s geomagnetic field will be in a state ranging from calm to excited.

The probability of geomagnetic storms remains low:

  • the probability of a minor magnetic storm is 10%
  • the probability of a strong magnetic storm is 1%.

Thus, no dangerous magnetic storms are currently expected.

Are new strong solar flares possible?

Despite generally low activity, scientists admit the possibility of new flares:

  • probability of an M-class flare — 10%
  • the probability of an X-class flare is 1%.

M-class flares can cause medium-strength magnetic storms, while X-class flares can cause strong geomagnetic storms.

When magnetic storms may begin

According to forecasts, the Earth’s magnetosphere will remain relatively stable between February 19 and 22.

However, the situation may change if new powerful flares appear on the Sun.

How magnetic storms affect human health

During magnetic storms, some people may experience a deterioration in their well-being.

The most common symptoms are

  • headache or migraine
  • weakness and fatigue
  • irritability
  • sleep disturbances
  • decreased concentration
  • fluctuations in blood pressure
  • rapid heartbeat
  • People with cardiovascular diseases are particularly sensitive to magnetic storms.

Solar activity remains under control

Currently, solar activity remains low, and no strong magnetic storms are forecast in the near future. At the same time, scientists continue to monitor the Sun, as the situation may change.
