There are 7 prisons and pre-trial detention centres left on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. The Ministry of Justice responded that they know about the prisoners

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 11 penitentiary institutions and pre-trial detention centres have ended up on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" was reported by the Department for the Execution of Criminal Sentences of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.

Some of the occupied institutions have returned to Ukrainian control. Obviously, after the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. So now there are seven prisons under the control of the Russian Federation.

“As of 19.08.2024, there are still 7 institutions in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. There is no communication with the institutions that are on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine,” – Head of the Department of Documentary, Administrative and Economic Support Olena Levkovych

The Ministry of Justice noted that due to the lack of communication, there is no information about the persons held in these prisons.

  • There were 5 institutions in Donetsk region, two of which are located on the temporarily occupied territory. The other three institutions were evacuated from the convicts and detainees.
  • There was one institution in luhansk region that is currently located on the temporarily occupied territory.
  • There were 11 prisons and pre-trial detention centres in Zaporizhzhia region, three of them are occupied. Four are functioning, the other four have been evacuated.
  • There are 10 functioning institutions in Kharkiv region.
  • There are 4 functioning institutions in Sumy region.

Evacuation of prisoners and security measures during air raids

According to the Ministry of Justice, prisons and detention centres in Ukraine operate under martial law.

Thus, each institution has developed an algorithm for staff actions during an air alert. Prisoners have access to shelters and radiation shelters.

In the event of a threat to the life and health of convicts and persons taken into custody, evacuation is carried out. During the full-scale invasion, 12 penal institutions were evacuated to safer locations.
