A two-time European weightlifting champion died in the war

Honoured Master of Sports of Ukraine, participant of the 2016 Olympic Games, where he took 4th place, two-time European weightlifting champion Oleksandr Peleshenko died at the front. This was reported by the NOC of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“From the first days of the full-scale invasion, Oleksandr joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Yesterday we received the sad news of his death,”

– the organisation’s website reads.

Viktor Slobodianyuk, the state coach of the Ukrainian weightlifting team, said that Peleshenko died on 5 May, while performing combat operations. The Ukrainian weightlifter joined the Ukrainian army in 2022.

It should be noted that at the time of his death, Peleshenko was 30 years old. The weightlifter competed in major international tournaments from 2015 to 2017, after which he was suspended from competitions for some time in 2018 due to a positive doping test. The weightlifter’s suspension was due to expire in 2026.
