A new salt mine was launched in Transcarpathia: what is known

After a year-and-a-half break, rock salt production has resumed in Zakarpattia, Ukraine, at the Tereblya deposit, a project that, after the occupation of the Artemivske deposit, actually became the only source of Ukrainian rock salt. Valentyn Kondratiev, co-owner of Kation Invest, told nadra.info about the resumption of work, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
What is known about the strategic deposit
“Kation Invest received a special permit for the deposit back in 2017.
Construction of the mine started in 2022, and the first statements about its strategic importance were made in August 2023, when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the deposit could provide Ukraine with both technical and food salt.
What is known about the conflict that put the work on hold
In March 2024, work had to be suspended due to a corporate conflict between shareholders. It stopped the construction of the mine and production, postponing plans to launch a full production cycle. The company’s beneficiaries are Valentyn Kondratiev and Oksana Omelyanenko.
Volumes and sales market
According to Kondratiev, the resumed production is currently focused on the production of technical salt for industrial processing. Five contracts have already been signed with road services in Zakarpattia, Lviv, and Zhytomyr regions.
The company plans to produce about 60 thousand tons of technical salt in 2024, and by 2026 to reach the design capacity of 450 thousand tons per year and start producing edible salt.

The launch of the new mine is seen as a critical element of industrial safety
The occupation in 2022 of the Artemivske deposit in Donetsk Oblast, which was considered the largest in Eurasia, effectively left Ukraine without a key source of rock salt. Therefore, the launch of a new mine in Zakarpattia is seen as a critical element of food and industrial security.
The Tereblya deposit is estimated at 15.5 million tons of reserves, and the mine itself is called the first new salt mine built in Ukraine since independence.
