NABU and SAP investigate corruption case at Volyn Customs worth almost half a billion hryvnias

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are investigating a criminal scheme at the Volyn Customs, which caused UAH 475 million in losses to the state. on 4 April, four customs officials were notified of suspicion, Komersant Ukrayinsky citing the press services of the authorities.
“According to the investigation, during 2018-2019, members of a criminal organisation led by a former law enforcement officer, in collusion with officials of the Volyn Customs, illegally moved highly liquid goods (mobile phones, computer equipment, clothing of well-known manufacturers, etc.) through the Yahodyn international checkpoint, undercutting customs payments to the state budget,” the NABU said,
– the NABU said in a statement.
The scheme was quite simple. It consisted of disguising imported valuable goods with so-called “cover goods” of much lower value. Officials of the Volyn Customs ensured customs clearance of goods without proper customs formalities, drew up forged acts on customs inspections, and entered false information into the customs clearance system.
The investigating authorities estimate the total losses to the state at UAH 475 million.
In total, there are 20 suspects in this criminal proceeding, including 9 employees of the Volyn Customs and 11 individuals. Their actions are classified under Part 1 of Article 255, Part 2, 3 of Article 212, Part 2 of Article 364, Part 1 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The issue of choosing a measure of restraint for the new suspects is currently being decided.
