Ukrainian MP Lyudmyla Buymister has announced the registration of draft law No. 13602-1, which provides for the liquidation of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). She wrote about this on Facebook, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the deputy, the SBI initially had no constitutional basis, did not fulfill the task of becoming a single powerful investigative body, and instead duplicates the powers of the SBU, the National Police and other law enforcement agencies.

She emphasized that the bureau has become an instrument of political influence, and in times of war it is used to persecute military and civil society activists, which harms defense capabilities.

Resource costs

Establishing and maintaining the SBI costs the state and international partners hundreds of millions of hryvnias annually.

Buimister suggests that these resources should be used to reform the SBU, the prosecutor’s office, military justice and other basic institutions.

The alternative

The draft law provides for the transfer of SBI functions to the Military Police and the Security Service of Ukraine.

She has also registered bills to restore the military justice system.

According to the MP, the creation of new bodies without a clear legal basis creates chaos that plays into the hands of the enemy. In wartime, we need simple, legal and effective solutions.
