MP Yevhen Shevchenko is served with a new suspicion

The Security Service of Ukraine, the Office of the Prosecutor General and the State Bureau of Investigation have announced a new suspicion against MP Yevhen Shevchenko, who has been in custody since November 2024 on charges of treason. This was reported by the SBU, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Although the name of the suspect has not been officially announced, it follows from the case file that it is Shevchenko.

What is being charged

According to the investigation, the MP demanded UAH 14.5 million in bribes from a Ukrainian company for unimpeded supplies of mineral fertilizers from Belarus. These funds were allegedly transferred to the accounts of a company registered to the MP’s son. He is charged with large-scale fraud (Part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code).

The SBU notes that Shevchenko created artificial obstacles in the logistics between Belarus and Ukraine, and then demanded a bribe for their “solution.” Also, according to intelligence, the MP received regular kickbacks by offering Belarusian fertilizer import quotas to enterprises.

Context of the case

  • on November 14, 2024, Shevchenko was notified of suspicion of high treason for publicly disseminating pro-Russian narratives and statements that harmed Ukraine’s information security.
  • He has been in custody without bailsince November 15, 2024. His arrest has been extended several times, most recently until August 14, 2025.

What preceded it

  • In 2021, Shevchenko visited Minsk on his own and met with the unrecognized President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, after which he was expelled from the Servant of the People faction.
  • In 2023, the head of the GUR, Kyrylo Budanov, said that Shevchenko had been used as an intermediary for contacts with the Belarusian side for some time.
  • In November 2024, Shevchenko appealed to Donald Trump to “stop the dictatorship in Ukraine” and publicly suggested that Volodymyr Zelenskyy “engage in a dialogue” with Russia, which drew sharp criticism from the authorities.
