MPs renamed only two out of five settlements

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted resolutions to rename the cities of Yuzhnoukrainsk and Yuzhne in Mykolaiv and Odesa regions, respectively. This was announced by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko on Telegram, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The Parliament considered a series of resolutions on renaming Ukrainian settlements. Thus, two resolutions were adopted:

  • on renaming the town of Yuzhnoukrainsk, Voznesensk district, Mykolaiv region, to the city of Pivdenoukrainsk (275 votes);
  • on renaming the city of Yuzhne, Odesa district, Odesa region, to the city of Pivdenne (279 votes).

At the same time, the Rada failed to vote on resolutions to rename six other settlements. For example, they failed to rename Pervomaisk in Mykolaiv region. Olvia and Olviopol were proposed, but none of the resolutions received the necessary support.

They also failed to rename Sinelnykove in the Dnipro region. Rivne was proposed, but only 180 MPs voted in favour. Sinelnikov was an imperial general.

They also failed to rename Pavlohrad. They suggested Matviyiv.

On 19 September, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution to rename more than 320 settlements and districts.

The renaming concerns the settlements and districts of Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnipropetrovs’k, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zakarpattia, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Luhansk, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava, Rivne, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Kherson, Khmelnytsky, Cherkasy and Chernihiv regions. They contained symbols of Russian imperial policy or did not comply with the norms of the Ukrainian language.
