What is special about the Tauric Chersonese coin?
Chersonesos Tavriya is an ancient city-polis founded in 422-421 BC, which had its own coinage system and was an important trade and cultural center of the region for centuries.
According to the National Bank, the history of Chersonesos is divided into two major periods:
- ancient – from the foundation of the city to the IV century AD;
- medieval – from the V to the XV century.
For almost two millennia, Chersonesos played a key role in the relations between Byzantium and Kievan Rus, as well as in the spread of Christianity in the territory of modern Ukraine.
Design and artwork
The author of the coin’s artistic design and sculpture was Volodymyr Demianenko. The commemorative coin is part of the series “Ancient Monuments of Ukraine”.
Reverse
The foreground depicts the ruins of one of the oldest buildings in Chersonesos – the Basilica. In the background is the Cathedral of St. Prince Volodymyr, built in the mid-nineteenth century on the site of a medieval church, where, according to historical speculation, Prince Volodymyr was baptized. In the upper part of the semicircle is the inscription “CHERSONES OF TAVRIA”.

Obverse
The small State Emblem of Ukraine is depicted, above which is the inscription “NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE”. The central composition is complemented by a fragment of an ancient architectural structure and a signal bell. At the bottom, against the background of a meander ornament, there are ancient coins of Chersonesos and a lamp of the V-VI centuries AD.
