The central regions of Ukraine are currently experiencing the greatest power shortages: when will everything be restored?

“On 26 August, Russia attacked our substations with cluster missiles for the first time, but thanks to the I and II levels of protection, we lost a very small amount of equipment,” said Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal today.

“However, the central regions of Ukraine were massively cut off from electricity after this missile attack, which indicates that there are serious problems in the power grid.

"Komersant Ukrainian" has been looking into how long it will take to restore power supply and what the main obstacles are in the process of restoring the destroyed energy infrastructure.

Olga Buslavets, former Minister of Energy of Ukraine, explains for how the loss of even a small amount of equipment affects power outages.

“We hit the capacity of nuclear power plants. And now not all nuclear power plants are producing electricity because there is no place to supply it,” Olha Buslavets

Energy expert Sergiy Dyachenko in an exclusive commentary for [Kommersant] notes that the central region of Ukraine, Kyiv region, is energy deficient. Therefore, it suffers the most in terms of disruption of connections with the power grid.

“Substations are being knocked out, which means that the unified energy system is much harder to operate. That is why the eastern region and the central and northern regions, Kyiv and Chernihiv, are the most affected,” says Sergey Dyachenko

The western part of Ukraine, on the other hand, has a surplus because nuclear power plants are concentrated there, and now it is much more difficult to distribute electricity generated in other regions. Dyachenko adds that Kyiv is about 25% self-sufficient in electricity. And when the ability to receive electricity from the western regions is interrupted due to Russian attacks, residents experience shortages.

Experts predict severe electricity restrictions in Ukraine within 1-2 weeks. According to former Fuel and Energy Minister Ivan Plachkov, the situation may stabilise in a week or two, provided there are no new such massive attacks.
