The worst situation with electricity in three regions of Ukraine: what is happening

12 February 22:42

After another massive Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the most difficult situation with electricity supply has developed in Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Energy workers are working around the clock to repair the damaged facilities, but in a number of areas, electricity is only available for a few hours a day. This was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a meeting of the Headquarters for the Elimination of the Consequences of Attacks on the Energy System, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Electricity is only supplied for a few hours

According to Denys Shmyhal, the situation in the energy system remains difficult, especially in the regions that have suffered the most damage.

“In Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro regions, the restoration of energy facilities continues throughout the day after a massive nighttime missile strike,” Denys Shmyhal said.

The prime minister explained that in many areas, electricity is being supplied with restrictions.

“In most areas, electricity is only available for 3-4 hours after 7-8 hours of outage. In some difficult cases, electricity is only restored for 2-3 hours,” he said.

This is due to extensive damage to energy facilities, which require lengthy repairs.

Dozens of emergency crews are working in Kyiv

Dozens of repair teams are involved in restoring power supply in the capital.

“Sixty-two crews worked on restoring power supply in Kyiv today. Next week, severe frosts will return to Ukraine, so the task for all services is to speed up repair work as much as possible,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

He also added that preparations for the next heating season have already begun in order to avoid similar crises in the future.

Ukraine receives assistance from international partners

Ukraine is receiving large-scale international assistance to support its energy system.

According to the Minister of Energy, over 13 tons of equipment has been delivered in the last 24 hours, including:

  • generators;
  • power transformers;
  • hydraulic units;
  • switches and other energy components.

Ukraine has received assistance from a number of countries and partners:

  • Moldova provided humanitarian aid for the energy sector;
  • Lithuania provided 46 generators for defense needs;
  • The European Union delivered 500 generators to Kyiv;
  • Denmark sent generators and a mobile boiler with a capacity of 1,455 kW;
  • Switzerland provided energy assistance worth over $35 million, including generators and power modules.

This equipment allows for the rapid restoration of power supply and ensures the operation of critical infrastructure.

Russian attacks pose risks to the power grid

Russia’s massive attacks on energy infrastructure have caused significant damage to power generation facilities, substations, and power grids.

Energy companies are working hard to restore power to consumers as quickly as possible. At the same time, the authorities are calling on Ukrainians to be prepared for possible temporary power restrictions, especially in view of the expected cold spell.

The government and international partners continue to coordinate efforts to restore the power grid and ensure a stable heating season.
