“Invisible Front”: Ukraine has a new military holiday – the Day of Electronic Warfare Troops
12 September 2025 16:09
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed Decree No. 679/2025, which officially establishes the Day of the Electronic Warfare Forces (EWF) on September 12. From now on, it will be celebrated annually, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the president, it honors the military, who work “invisibly but very professionally” – neutralizing drones and missiles, covering positions, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring communication between units.
Why it matters
- Electronic warfare troops have become a key element of Ukraine’s defense during a full-scale war.
- Their systems prevent Russian UAVs and precision weapons from operating.
- This is not only a “protective shield” but also a way to deprive the enemy of technological superiority.
As Zelensky explained
The President emphasized that the new holiday is intended to develop military traditions and emphasize the contribution of electronic warfare units to repelling aggression.
“Today is the day of people who work invisibly but very professionally to protect Ukraine… Electronic warfare warriors help our soldiers to be safe,” he wrote.
As a reminder, Ukraine already has several professional military days – of the Air Assault Forces, Special Operations Forces, and artillerymen.
Since 2022, after Russia’s massive use of kamikaze drones and missiles, the need for the development of electronic warfare has increased dramatically.
According to experts, it is Ukrainian electronic warfare systems that often become a decisive factor in repelling attacks on Kyiv and other cities.
How electronic warfare affects warfare
Electronic warfare is one of the most dynamic areas of modern warfare.
- Against drones and aircraft
- Electronic warfare systems block GPS navigation, which is why Russian drones often lose their orientation or crash.
- Ukrainian units use “jammers” and mobile systems that can simultaneously shoot down several targets.
- Protection of critical infrastructure
- Electronic umbrellas cover energy facilities, bridges, and communication hubs, reducing the effectiveness of missile strikes.
- The battle for communications
- At the frontline, electronic warfare interferes with Russian intelligence and communications equipment. This reduces the accuracy of enemy artillery fire.
- At the same time, Ukrainian troops receive more stable communication channels to coordinate operations.
Military analysts emphasize that the effectiveness of electronic warfare directly depends on innovation and the speed of modernization.
