Germany is preparing to introduce a separate legal status for Ukrainians

Germany is proposing a new status for refugees from Ukraine, which should help reduce benefit costs and attract more people to the labour market. This was stated by German Finance Minister Christian Lindner in an interview with the WirtschaftsWoche media outlet, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“We should consider a separate legal status for refugees from Ukraine. They should not immediately receive the citizen’s allowance, which is aimed at a socio-economic subsistence level with social participation even without work,” Lindner said.

He added that asylum seekers should be granted benefits and help to find work. The minister is proposing this idea instead of the current system, when Ukrainian refugees receive payments on a par with citizens.

Earlier, Christian Lindner opposed the embargo on the purchase of Russian oil, coal and gas. He said that it would be extremely difficult to find an alternative to Russian energy resources.

In addition, according to Corriere della Sera, the German Finance Minister blocked a €9 billion financial tranche from the European Union to Ukraine in 2022. At the time, the official motivated his position by the fact that in September Ukraine risked not paying €900 million of its external debt.
