Germany increases aid to Ukraine: €100 million for energy in times of war
4 December 2025 17:32
Germany has announced the allocation of an additional 100 million euros to restore Ukraine’s energy infrastructure after massive Russian strikes. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
They clarified that the funds will be transferred through the German development bank KfW to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine.
What does the new tranche mean?
The additional financing will bring Germany’s total contribution to the Fund to 550 million euros by the end of 2025, making Berlin the largest donor to the mechanism created to support the Ukrainian energy system in the face of regular attacks by Russia.
Deputy Energy Minister Roman Andarak called such assistance “critically important” for the resilience of the energy grid, especially amid the expected winter aggravation.
Why Ukraine’s Energy Support Fund has become a key instrument after February 2022
The Energy Support Fund for Ukraine has become a key instrument after February 2022: it accumulates contributions from partners to purchase equipment, repair infrastructure, and improve the protection of energy facilities. In total, the commitments of international partners exceed EUR 1.75 billion.
After Russia’s spring and summer attacks on energy hubs, some of the largest since the beginning of the war, Ukraine’s need for emergency funding remained acute.
Germany, which has previously announced the expansion of military and humanitarian aid, demonstrates that its commitment to supporting Kyiv is not weakening, despite internal political discussions in Berlin.
The Foundation will continue to finance the purchase of equipment for network repair
The Fund will continue to finance the purchase of transformers, grid repair equipment, backup power systems and other critical components. Other partners – including the Netherlands, which recently provided €65 million – are expected to increase their contributions as well.
The Ukrainian authorities warn that due to the scale of damage to the power system, the winter of 2025/2026 could be “the most difficult in the entire war.” That is why attracting rapid external assistance remains crucial.
