Germany cancels social assistance for some Ukrainian refugees

Ukrainians who arrived in Germany after April 1, 2025, will no longer receive civilian income (Bürgergeld). They will have the status of asylum seekers, which implies lower payments and a different procedure for assistance. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to BILD.

This was agreed upon by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Social Policy Minister Berbel Bas. This marks the end, after almost four years, of the special status for refugees from war-torn Ukraine.

Ukrainians who arrived before April 1 will continue to receive €563 a month in basic assistance (for single persons). The state also covers the cost of rent, heating, etc. Depending on the age of the child, the allowance is 357 to 471 euros.

Newcomers will receive smaller payments – about 180 euros per month plus accommodation, like other asylum seekers.

The German authorities believe that the new rules will motivate more Ukrainians to find employment. Currently, 1.1 million Ukrainians live in Germany.
