The New US Security Strategy: What Does It Say About Ukraine?

5 December 15:32

The new US security strategy clearly identifies Ukraine as one of the key priorities in Washington’s Euro-Atlantic policy.

Military expert Dmytro Snegiryov notes in a commentary for "Komersant Ukrainian" that the document actually brings Kyiv closer to the mechanisms similar to NATO’s Article Five, i.e. the possibility of a direct US military response in the event of a threat from Russia.

According to the expert, unlike the EU’s approach, which focuses mainly on political and economic guarantees, the US strategy has a clear military component.

This refers to the US readiness to participate in deterring the Russian Federation, including potential military confrontation.

The United States is expanding the relevant norms on the nature of military and technical assistance to our country. Both in terms of direct supply of munitions and weapons, and modernization of military-industrial complex elements, the military expert said.

According to Snegiryov, such attention to Ukraine confirms its status as one of the main priorities of the US military strategy in the post-Soviet space.

What is known about the new US security strategy for Ukraine?

Its main strategy is to restore friendly and stable relations with Russia, end the war in Ukraine, and prevent further expansion of NATO.

Other positions of the document:

  • Washington wants Europe to strengthen its own defense on its own;
  • The US administration recognizes the existence of a “conflict of positions ” with European officials;
  • The Indo-Pacific region is identified as one of the key geopolitical and economic areas of the 21st century;
  • In trade with China, the United States proposes to focus only on goods of non-strategic importance.

Negotiations on the US peace plan

In November, the United States presented a new peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, which was developed by Trump’s special envoy Steve Vitkoff and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

The initial version of the document had 28 points, but frankly, they were very favorable to Russia. In this regard, on October 23 and 30, the US and Ukrainian delegations held consultations to finalize the document and make it more favorable for Kyiv. The first meeting was held in Geneva, Switzerland, and the second in Miami

On Tuesday, December 2, Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and discuss the updated document.

After 5 hours of talks, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov spoke to the media. He said that no compromise had been found yet.
