“Nova Poshta lost UAH 800 million worth of assets due to the war: what happened to Ukrainians’ parcels

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the postal and logistics services operator Nova Poshta has suffered significant losses. The Russian Armed Forces damaged or destroyed branches, depots, and post offices, resulting in losses of 800 million hryvnias, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing AIN.

As of June 2025, Nova Poshta has paid its customers almost UAH 134 million in compensation for lost or destroyed parcels. During the active hostilities, Ukrainians did not receive 138,000 parcels: they were destroyed in depots, branches and post offices by fire during missile and drone strikes by the Russian Armed Forces.

In addition, due to the threatening situation in the East and South, the company was forced to temporarily close 19 branches in the frontline areas of Donetsk, Kherson and Kharkiv regions. The company representatives explain:

“We left the settlements where the security situation did not allow us to stay. We will be the first to return as soon as it becomes possible.

We had to make such decisions for the safety of our employees and customers. However, the company remains ready to resume its presence as soon as the situation allows.

The scale of the losses and their impact on the postal carrier

The lost infrastructure includes not only buildings, but also more than 138,000 destroyed parcels, which caused both material and image losses.

The amount of UAH 800 million includes the restoration of the depot, post office, full restoration of technical infrastructure and equipment critical to the company’s operations.

For comparison, according to Nova Poshta, in 2022 alone, the group paid about UAH 7.1 billion in taxes and fees to the budget (as the budget of an average Ukrainian city), which demonstrates the level of importance of the company to the economy.

Compensation mechanism and customer relations

According to AIN, compensation is paid as part of the company’s policy of reimbursement for damaged or lost shipments.

The compensation procedure includes:

  • verification through an acceptance certificate;
  • assessment of the value of the shipment at the time of registration;
  • payment of compensation in accordance with the terms of the contract with the sender/recipient.

The NP explains that in order to receive compensation, the client only needs to provide supporting documents – the act and information on the total cost of the shipment.

What’s next: plans for the future

In the near future, the postal operator will focus on:

  • returning to the frontline regions. The company said that after the security situation stabilizes, it plans to reopen offices in the closed areas.
  • continuation of the compensation policy. “Nova Poshta guarantees support to customers who suffered during the war.
  • improving security. Together with local authorities, we are working on the construction of shelters and strengthening of facilities.
