Trump’s new tariffs crash Apple shares: iPhone and more to rise in price in the near future

4 April 12:02

Donald Trump’s decision to impose 10 percent tariffs on all imports to the United States, as well as separate duties for the largest trading partners, came as a shock to the global market. Apple suffered the largest losses, with its shares falling by 9.5%, resulting in a loss of more than $300 billion in capitalization. This is one of the worst days for the company since the pandemic. Will this decision affect Ukraine and will iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, and other technology really go up in price in a few weeks – read more in the "Komersant Ukrainian" article

Apple’s production is largely concentrated in China, which has been hit with stiff duties of 34%. This automatically means an increase in the cost of gadgets, including iPhones, MacBooks, and iPads. So the company is probably already preparing for either a decline in profits or an inevitable price increase.

iPhone price increase – will Ukrainians feel it?

Ukrainian consumers should prepare for an increase in prices for Apple technology within 1-3 months. According to analysts, prices for new iPhones may rise by 10-20%. Official suppliers may remove affordable models from the lineup, including budget versions of the iPhone with 64 GB of storage. This will lead to an increase in demand for used equipment.

In addition to Apple, other computer manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Intel, and AMD will also feel the effects, as most of them have production facilities outside the United States. Although there are no accurate forecasts of their pricing policies, the rise in import costs could provoke a similar reaction.

“The first thing Ukrainians need to prepare for is a rise in the price of technology. Technology that is made in China. These are smartphones, iPhones. And given the complex production chains, this decision will have an echo across all global markets,” suggests political strategist Oleh Posternak.

But Oleg Pendzin has a different opinion. According to him, iPhones will become more expensive in the US due to Trump’s new duties, but not in Ukraine, because they are imported directly from China and Taiwan without customs restrictions.

“Earlier, the Western press estimated that AirPods from Vietnam or iPads from India could rise in price by $20-40 depending on the model. And an iPhone that costs $1,000 will increase in price by 50-70 dollars,” Oleg Pendzin believes.

Global markets are in a panic

The new duties resulted in the largest collapse in the US stock market since 2020.

According to The Wall Street Journal, in the first hour of trading alone, the value of shares of the largest American companies fell by $2 trillion, and the total market capitalization fell by $2.7 trillion. The fall also affected online trading giants – Amazon lost $165 billion and Nvidia lost $183 billion.

Are Russia and Belarus outside the sanctions?

Interestingly, the new tariffs did not affect Russia and Belarus.

The US explained that these countries are already under economic sanctions. This exception raises many questions, especially given Moscow’s aggressive policy. Read more in the article [Kommersant]
