New restrictions for Ukrainian refugees in the EU: what we know

19 March 14:37

The Czech Republic may tighten the rules for granting temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees after 2027. This involves potential restrictions on certain categories of Ukrainian citizens, specifically men of working age and people from relatively safe regions. This was reported by the Czech publication Novinky, citing a statement by Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

What changes may be introduced

According to the Czech Interior Minister, various options for revising the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainians are currently being discussed.

“Other countries also want adjustments, which could take several forms. From a geographical standpoint, western Ukraine—that is, the western, relatively safe part—will be excluded from this temporary protection,” stated the head of the Czech Ministry of the Interior.

The issue of granting this status to men of working age may also be discussed.

Regarding this, Metnar noted:

“Ukraine itself is interested in men staying or, possibly, returning in the event of a ceasefire.”

The decision depends on the European Union

At the same time, the Czech Republic cannot unilaterally change the rules for granting temporary protection. Such decisions must be made at the level of the entire European Union.

According to Metnar, this issue has already been discussed with European partners, particularly during a meeting in Berlin with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.

The Czech minister emphasized the need to launch a broad discussion on future changes to the policy regarding Ukrainian refugees.

How many Ukrainians are in the Czech Republic

According to official data from the Czech Ministry of the Interior, there are currently over 400,000 Ukrainians living in the country who have been granted temporary protection.

Approximately 6,000 new refugees arrive in the Czech Republic every month.

The ministry notes that this number of people places a significant burden on the country’s social system, which is why possible changes are being discussed.

Why is the Czech Republic talking about restrictions

Czech authorities explain the need to revise the conditions of temporary protection by citing the state’s limited resources and the need to balance migration policy.

At the same time, Prague emphasizes that any potential changes will be discussed at the EU level and will not be implemented unilaterally.
