The UK’s first high-energy laser weapon system mounted on an armored vehicle has been successfully tested at the Radnor test site in Wales. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of the country, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The laser was integrated into the Wolfhound multi-purpose armored vehicle, a protected vehicle for transporting paratroopers.
According to the UK Minister of Defense Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle, “This groundbreaking technology demonstrates the country’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of military innovation.”
The laser was developed through a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Equipment and Support Activity and the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, known as Team Hersa, as well as an industrial consortium led by Raytheon UK.
What are the advantages of such laser weapons?
As explained by the British Ministry of Defense, the laser works by directing an intense beam of infrared light in the form of energy with the help of advanced sensors and tracking systems that provide real-time fixation and accuracy. Unlike conventional munitions, laser weapons are virtually unlimited in terms of ammunition stockpiles. This means that it can be a cost-effective alternative to some existing weapons.
What is known about the latest developments in laser weapons
In November, the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces unveiled the latest laser air defense system to destroy small drones.

According to Militarny, the system was demonstrated during a parade in honor of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. It is designed to protect airfields and military territories from potential attacks by small drones along with missile and cannon air defense systems.

The Israeli government has signed a contract with Elbit Systems to supply lasers for the Iron Beam air defense system. This was announced in late October by the company’s press service. The contract is worth approximately $200 million.

In October, the American companies Leonardo DRS, Inc. and BlueHalo demonstrated the successful destruction of numerous drones using the BlueHalo 26 kW SARANA laser system. In addition, the demonstration included almost simultaneous engagement of UAVs and ground targets with a laser and a 30 mm cannon.

Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland are also successfully cooperating in the field of laser weapons. In September, they signed a cooperation agreement. Recently, a demonstration model of laser weapons from Rheinmetall and MBDA Germany was integrated into the German Navy’s frigate 124 Sachsen and demonstrated good results during test trials.
