“A New Level of Safety”: Ukrzaliznytsia Explores an Aviation-Style Insurance Model

Ukrzaliznytsia is ready to consider introducing passenger insurance based on a model similar to that used in air travel to cover the risks of train delays and health-related damages, said Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chairman of the board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" citing Interfax-Ukraine.
He also said that Ukrzaliznytsia is open to proposals to develop, together with insurance companies, products to insure against possible delays.
“We are generally open to this and will work with the market. The only thing is that, as a rule, there are exclusions for any insurance claim in cases of force majeure. Therefore, the question here is whether the insurance market is ready to accept these risks,” Pertsovskyi clarified.
As for ticket prices, he said that until the end of martial law, the cost of passenger tickets will remain reasonable and affordable for passengers.
As a reminder, Ukrzaliznytsia is tightening passenger safety rules on trains to ensure that travel remains predictable and safe even in emergency situations.
Evacuation in the event of a drone threat to passenger trains saves lives, but at the same time can pose a critical danger with the slightest carelessness.
This is exactly how a female conductor with Ukrzaliznytsia was killed on the Odesa Railway during a passenger evacuation. An oncoming train, which was also heading to its evacuation stop, struck her, causing fatal injuries. Additionally, one of the passengers sustained moderate injuries.
And on the morning of March 24, the Russian army again attacked the railway in the Kharkiv region. A drone struck a commuter train car: one passenger was killed.
