Compulsory vacation for the military: what the law signed by Zelensky changed

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law guaranteeing at least 15 days of vacation for the military. They will also have an additional 14 days of rest. This is stated in the document card on the parliament’s website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

This law amends another law – “On social and legal protection of military personnel and their families.” It is about vacations for the military.

As Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Presidential Office,explained, the document gives servicemen the right to a guaranteed vacation for 15 out of 30 days of annual basic leave, the other 15 days are granted depending on the capabilities of the unit.

“Combatants will now have the opportunity to receive an additional 14 days of vacation that were inactive during martial law,” added the deputy head of the Presidential Administration.

Contract soldiers aged 18 to 24, without higher education, provided they are still studying, will be eligible for leave to take exams.

The law comes into force one month after its official publication.

What types of leave are currently available to military personnel?

The following types of leave are currently available to military personnel

  • basic annual leave for the military;
  • on the occasion of the birth of a child;
  • for the destruction of enemy equipment;
  • due to illness or rehabilitation as a result of injury;
  • for women servicemen in connection with pregnancy and childbirth;
  • an additional period of leave for servicemen who have returned from captivity;
  • for family reasons or other important reasons.
