Offended by the Nobel? The media learned why Trump did not support the Venezuelan opposition

5 January 14:18

US President Donald Trump did not support Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado because she did not concede the Nobel Peace Prize to him.

This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to The Washington Post.

Sources close to the White House said that Trump has no interest in supporting Machado because of her decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, which the US leader openly sought to receive.

One of the interlocutors said that Machado’s decision to accept the prize was “the gravest sin,” even though she said she was dedicating the award to Trump.

“If she had refused and said: “I can’t accept it because it belongs to Donald Trump,” she would be the president of Venezuela today,” the WP source emphasized.

Earlier, the US president actually questioned the prospects of Machado coming to power.

“It will be very difficult for her to become a leader,” Trump said when asked about the Nobel Prize winner, adding that she “has no support or respect in the country.”

A person close to Machado’s team said that her associates, who secretly fled Venezuela to attend the Nobel ceremony in Norway, “were surprised by Trump’s comment.”

According to one of the leaders of the Venezuelan opposition, the US president’s comments “were difficult for many members of the opposition movement.” At the same time, he noted that “in every transition period, you have to swallow bitter pills.”

As a reminder, on January 3, the United States captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a large-scale operation. Later that day, Trump said that the United States would lead Venezuela until the transfer of power.

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Venezuela ruled that Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will temporarily act as head of state.
