Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will mean Europe’s direct participation in the war and the sending of European taxpayers’ money to Kyiv, and Hungary is strongly opposed to this. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban before the start of the EU summit in Copenhagen, the event is being broadcast on the European Commission’s website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Our position is no membership (of Ukraine in the EU) at all <…>, because membership will mean, firstly, that war will come to the European Union; secondly, money from Europe will go to Ukraine,” he said.
The Hungarian prime minister emphasized that Ukraine’s accession to the EU is “too much”; a strategic cooperation agreement would be enough.
Earlier, Orban said that Hungary is expecting a “cage fight” over the controversy surrounding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, which European leaders intend to discuss during the Copenhagen summit.
The Hungarian prime minister criticized the statements of his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk and European Council President Antonio Costa that the war in Ukraine is a war for the whole of Europe.
In late August, Bloomberg reported that the EU had explored possible legal moves to use the majority principle instead of the unanimity principle when voting on certain decisions of the bloc. It was noted that changing the voting principle would allow for “quick and decisive action” and prevent individual EU countries from blocking steps that were supported by the rest of the bloc.
