Hungary is a sovereign country and has the right to make certain decisions on its own. This was stated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Kossuth radio, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
This was his response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who is confident in his ability to convince the Hungarian authorities to stop buying oil from Russia.
“I realize that the US is a big country, and Hungary is smaller. But we have one thing in common: both countries are sovereign states,” the Prime Minister said.
Orban emphasized that Budapest, like Washington, has its own interests. The state expresses and represents them.
“If we are on good terms, let’s say friends, we will listen to each other’s [arguments]. And then everyone will do what they want,” the Hungarian prime minister added.
on September 23, the American leader held a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting with journalists took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. During the meeting, Trump said that he expects Hungary to refuse to purchase further Russian oil.
Subsequently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that the country intends to continue cooperation with Russia in the field of energy supplies.
