Five tasks as one: Naftogaz CEO is tasked with providing Ukraine with gas

14 May 15:34

Today, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal introduced the new CEO of Naftogaz, Serhiy Koretsky, to the staff of Naftogaz. This was reported by the government press service, according to [Kommersant].

Introducing the new head, the Prime Minister outlined five priority tasks for him and Naftogaz:

– preparing for the next heating season to ensure that all Ukrainians have light and heat in their homes;

– accumulation of sufficient reserves of “blue fuel” in gas storage facilities for the autumn and winter period;

– fast and high-quality restoration of the gas industry infrastructure damaged by Russia;

– increase of Ukrainian gas production to maximize the coverage of domestic needs;

– further development of distributed generation to minimize losses from Russian attacks and strengthen the Ukrainian energy sector with new capacities.

As reported by [Kommersant], the Supervisory Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine elected Sergiy Koretsky as the new Chairman of the Board in late April. Before that, he was the head of Ukrnafta.

What about gas reserves and winterization

In early November 2024, gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities amounted to 12.92 billion cubic meters. According to ExPro, in order to reach similar volumes this year, Ukraine needs to pump 6.3 bcm of natural gas into storage facilities in June-October. Part of these volumes will be covered by domestic production, but about 3-3.5 billion cubic meters will need to be imported in June-October 2025.

Currently, the underground gas storage facilities are 19.4% full, and compared to last year, the storage facilities have 31.7% or 2.79 bcm less gas. The injection volumes amount to 26-28 million cubic meters, and these volumes are higher compared to May last year.

What about Ukrainian gas production?

Despite the war, last year Ukrgasvydobuvannya ensured the implementation of the production program: 83 wells were put into operation. As a result, in 2024, the production volume of Naftogaz Group companies reached the highest level since 2017 – 14.6 bcm.

Ukrgasvydobuvannya also implemented more than 30 projects to modernize the ground infrastructure, which provided additional production of more than 300 million cubic meters (137% more compared to 2021 and 3% more than in 2023).

However, during 2024-2025, 34 Ukrgasvydobuvannya facilities were attacked by the enemy. The most destructive attack was in February 2025, which caused significant damage to state gas production, with losses of almost 50% of the volume.

Experts estimate that about 2.7 billion m3 of gas will be pumped into gas storage facilities at the expense of own production in preparation for the new heating season.
