French parliamentary elections: left-wing alliance leads, far-right loses, Macron outperforms everyone

According to the preliminary results of the second round of the parliamentary elections in France, which took place on 7 July 2024, the left-wing New People’s Front alliance won. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to Reuters.

“The New National Front won the largest number of seats in parliament – 182. President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist bloc “Together” won 168 seats, and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally and its allies won 143 seats.

This result resulted in a fragmented parliament, which could make it difficult to advance domestic policy. The current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has already announced his resignation, which will take place on Monday.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the far-left party “France Unconquered”, called on Macron to entrust the left-wing alliance with the formation of a government. However, representatives of the centrist camp have ruled out the possibility of cooperation with the far left.

President Macron is currently considering his next steps. The French constitution does not allow him to call new parliamentary elections within the next 12 months.

The current situation is unprecedented for France and could lead to a period of political uncertainty. If Macron’s forces refuse to form a coalition with the far left, they will have to do so with the far right. The least likely option is a coalition of the far left with the far right, as the ideological differences between them are very large.

The practical outcome of the election is that Macron’s party will remain in power – apparently, it was with this in mind that the French president called the snap parliamentary elections.
