The statement by US President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg that “both sides are ready for negotiations” has raised a number of questions in society. Valeriy Klochok, head of the Center for Public Analysis “Tower”, in an exclusive commentary for
Keith Kellogg, Special Representative for Ukraine of US President-elect Donald Trump, has expressed the opinion that the war between Ukraine and Russia has reached the stage of exhaustion, and this creates preconditions for negotiations. Kellogg compared the situation to a “cage fight” where both fighters want to surrender, but they need a mediator to end the conflict.
“Imagine a cage fight. You have two fighters, and both want to give up. You need a referee to separate them. And I think President Donald Trump can do that. He has the vision, the energy, and the ability to bring both sides together to negotiate,” Kellogg emphasized.
The special envoy promised to provide details on possible plans to resolve the situation and his upcoming visit to Ukraine later.
The negotiation process has begun
Valeriy Klochok emphasizes that the negotiations are already underway, and this is confirmed by statements of Ukrainian and international leaders. At the same time, Ukraine is looking for compromises while maintaining its strategic positions.
“A certain process is underway. This is evident from Zelenskyy’s statements in Brussels. For example, the issue of reducing the armed forces, which is being discussed as one of the conditions set by Russia, is being discussed. However, Ukraine clearly states that we are not ready for this,” notes Valeriy Klochok.
The role of Europe
European countries are currently cautious about supporting Ukraine due to domestic political challenges, but are also considering peacekeeping initiatives.
“Europe is not yet ready to fully finance the war. Many countries are holding elections, and this affects their decisions. However, Italy, France, Germany, and the UK have already expressed their readiness for peacekeeping missions. This is a signal to Trump: “We are ready to do our part, but we expect action from you,” explains Valeriy Klochok.
The key challenge remains providing Ukraine with resources to continue the fight and stabilize the economy.
“Ukraine needs money – for the budget, for the military, and for weapons. This is obvious to everyone. The only question is how these agreements will be formalized. Trump is currently under pressure to provide additional assistance. This is critically important for both us and Europe,” emphasizes Valeriy Klochok.
Prospects for ending the war
Klochok agrees with Kellogg’s opinion that the war has entered a phase of exhaustion, and neither side can achieve a decisive victory at this point. He says, “Neither we can knock them out, nor they can defeat us. However, help from our partners is coming, and this allows us to continue the fight.
“At the same time, it is obvious that Putin is interested in freezing the war, and this is a new challenge for Ukraine,” Klochok concludes.
According to Klochok, Ukraine must remain resilient and continue to work on strengthening its position in the international dialog. Military and financial assistance remain key factors that will influence the course of events.
